In another incident involving ride-hailing services’ drivers, an Uber driver has been shot dead in Karachi.

A 50-year-old driver of the popular ride-hailing app, Uber, has been fatally shot in the head in Karachi’s Bufferzone area. The tragic incidents involving the drivers of ride-hailing apps are on the rise recently and this time an elderly Uber driver is the victim.

The deceased was identified as Mirza Shahnawaz Baig, who was a retired employee of Pakistan International Airlines.

The incident happened near the Negan Chowrangi area of Karachi which comes under the jurisdiction of Taimuria Police.

Crime Scene

There are several theories about the motive behind the murder of Shahnawaz. However, the police are yet to ascertain whether the crime was motivated by a robbery or not. According to initial reports, Police didn’t find any signs of robbery from the crime scene.

The police further said that there were no signs of any resistance or any broken windows. According to the police, it seems that bullets were shot from inside the car as only the driver’s window was open. Police further suspects this to be a case of personal enmity. Furthermore, the police aren’t ruling out the grudge held by the local cab and rickshaw drivers against ride-hailing services’ drivers.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Amir Farooqi, says that this grudge might have led to the killing of Shahnawaz. “We will have to wait until the thorough investigation is done to determine the motive behind the murder”.

Police recovered empty shells of a 9mm pistol from the crime scene as well. According to the reports, Shahnawaz was shot three times. Karachi Police is yet to make any arrests in the case.

Just a week ago, a Careem captain named Sajawal Ameer was shot multiple times in Rawalpindi. Three weeks before that, another Careem captain was shot dead in Islamabad in a case of attempted robbery. Police arrested suspects in both cases after Careem shared data with the authorities. Careem drivers have protested and demanded that security of the captains must be ensured the relevant authorities.
